What is projector throw distance?
Throw distance is the physical distance from the projector lens to the main image surface. It is not the distance from the back of the projector or from the wall behind it.
What is throw ratio?
Throw ratio is lens distance divided by image width. A 1.2:1 projector needs about 1.2 feet of lens distance for each foot of image width—or 1.2 meters for each meter.
How do I calculate projector distance?
Multiply the desired image width by the projector’s throw ratio. A 10-foot-wide image with a 1.2–1.5:1 lens needs approximately 12–15 feet from the lens to the image plane.
What is the difference between standard, short, and ultra-short throw?
Standard-throw projectors sit farther from the image. Short-throw projectors create a large image from a few feet away. Ultra-short-throw projectors sit inches from a flat wall and project at a steep angle.
Is short throw always better for projection mapping?
No. Short throw helps in small rooms and reduces audience shadows, but it can make alignment, focus differences, and shadows from deep objects more noticeable.
Can any projector do projection mapping?
Most projectors that accept a normal video signal can be used. The mapping app warps and masks the image; the projector still needs the right brightness, throw ratio, inputs, and placement.
How many lumens do I need for projection mapping?
Small pale objects in a dark room can work with hundreds of standardized lumens. A garage door after dark often benefits from roughly 3,000–5,000. Larger, darker, or partially lit surfaces may need more.
Do I need a 4K projector?
No. Real 1080p is sufficient for most consumer mapping. Prioritize correct throw, standardized brightness, stable positioning, and a dependable connection before 4K.
What does native resolution mean?
Native resolution is the number of pixels the projector actually displays. A model that accepts a 4K input but displays it on a 1080p panel is not a native 4K projector.
Can I use a projector outside?
Only within the manufacturer’s environmental limits. Most consumer projectors are not weatherproof and require protection from rain, dew, condensation, wind, unsafe power, and blocked ventilation.
Should I use HDMI or wireless projection?
A wired HDMI path is generally easier to troubleshoot and more dependable for a rehearsed show. Wireless mirroring is convenient for testing but adds network, latency, and reconnection variables.
Why did my saved projection map move?
The projector or target may have shifted, or automatic focus, keystone, screen fit, or obstacle avoidance may have changed the image rectangle. Lock automatic geometry after alignment and mark the physical position.
Can I make the image larger with digital zoom?
Digital zoom can shrink or crop the active image inside the projector, but it cannot change the lens’s physical coverage or fix an incompatible throw ratio. Optical zoom is the useful placement adjustment.
How do I choose a projector for a house?
Measure one facade section, calculate throw from its width, plan to run after dark, and compare standardized brightness. A vivid garage door is a better first project than a dim image stretched over an entire house.
